Charme Dance AI: the grandpa (vovô) trend explained, and how to make yours
What the charme dance AI trend is, why the AI grandpa from Madureira took over TikTok, how it relates to baile charme AI, and how to make your own grandpa version from one photo.
What is the charme dance AI trend?
The charme dance AI trend is a 10-second vertical video of someone, often a grandpa, dancing the charme step in the middle of a packed night street party in Rio de Janeiro, made with AI from a single photo. The version that took off in October 2026 starred an AI-made grandpa, known on TikTok as Seu Zé de Madureira, out-dancing the whole crowd. Since then people remake it with their own photo, their grandpa's, or a friend's. On bailecharme.org you can make yours from one photo for $5.90, usually in under 10 minutes.
Charme dance AI or baile charme AI?
It's the same trend under different names:
| Name | Who uses it |
|---|---|
| Charme dance AI | English-speaking TikTok and Reels |
| Baile charme AI | Search and TikTok, in English and Portuguese |
| Baile charme IA, trend do vovô | Brazilian TikTok ("IA" is Portuguese for AI, "vovô" means grandpa) |
"Baile" means party or dance night, and "charme" is the name of the dance and the music played at it. So baile charme is the party, and charme is what people dance there.
Who is the grandpa in the trend?
The grandpa most people know is Seu Zé de Madureira, an AI-made character posted by a TikTok profile. He isn't a real dancer, and the trend's crowd and street aren't a real recording of him. His name points to Madureira, the Rio neighborhood where the best-known Baile Charme has run under the viaduct for more than three decades (Brasil de Fato).
bailecharme.org doesn't recreate Seu Zé or any other character. You make your own grandpa version, with the photo of a real grandpa, grandma, uncle or friend who is an adult and agreed to it.
Why did the grandpa version go viral?
- The contrast. Nobody expects grandpa to be the best dancer in a packed street party. The surprise is the joke, and it lands in the first two seconds.
- The step is easy to recognise. Charme is a smooth side-to-side step that the whole crowd does in time. Even if you've never seen it, you can tell everyone is doing the same move.
- Anyone can take his place. Because the crowd, the street and the step stay the same, swapping in a new face still reads as the same trend. That's what makes it easy to remake from a photo.
What kinds of remakes are people posting?

- Your own grandpa or grandma. The most shared kind: a family photo, the same 10-second party.
- Yourself. Your face in the middle of the crowd, doing the step you can't actually do.
- A friend. With their permission, as a birthday or group-chat joke.
Our videos only use photos of adults who agreed to it. No children, celebrities or other public figures.

Where does baile charme come from?
Baile charme grew out of Rio de Janeiro's Black music scene in the 1980s, with R&B, soul and hip-hop and a crowd dancing the same step. In 2013 it was recognised as intangible cultural heritage of the city of Rio (Rio City Hall). The AI trend borrows its look and its step; the real thing is a party with decades of history behind it.
